ridiculous. it is 56 degrees in d.c., 64 degrees right now in atlanta. that's with no sunshine at all. that's the morning low. it's incredible. we have some rain out there. but a fog is probably more of a problem than the rain this morning. the visibility now, new york city, half a mile. half a mile in hartford. about a quarter mile in philadelphia. okay in boston. but, you know, it's hit and miss. you can go in one valley, it's dense as could be, especially near rivers. other areas are not bad. d.c. is okay right now i'm sure philadelphia and new york city airport also have big problems. the highways and your morning commute also problematic. rain streaming up through new orleans, alabama and mississippi. expect rain in virginia, too. the windchills, minneapolis to denver, all of the northern plains, it's a frigid morning. even dallas has an 18 degree windchill. this has been a crazy weather pattern as of late, at least there's no big ice or snowstorms heading anywhere soon. >> that's good news. >>> all eyes in the auto world are on motor city today as the media gets a sneak peek at the ho

of north carolina. then we'll deal with icy problems. freezing rain. atlanta north, especially north georgia, mountains are going to get it good. and watch out there, north of memphis, nashville, too, depending on how warm your temperatures get now it's just beginning and you can see how widespread it is. the white is the snow. again, a lot of light snow. heading for chicago during the morning rush hour. could pick up an inch or two of fluffy snow. there's that ice and the pink shading is where we're getting freezing rain over kentucky. again, very light now but more intense throughout the day. how much snow? this is not a blockbuster event. in most cases, no shoveling or plowing will be needed. for the most part, one or two inches, the higher totals, some of the areas of west virginia, we may get enhancement from richmond to norfolk, to virginia beach. looks like mostly a miss for all of new england, from d.c., to the south, one or two inches later today. again, that's later today. for the daylight hours, chicago all way through the ohio valley. the forecast again, travel concerns,

of a lack of space. officials at the centers for disease control and prevention in atlanta report flu has killed 18 children through the end of last year. that number they say is almost certainly gone up. and the current number of flu cases already matches the peak of many previous years. this time scientists say the worst of the flu season is likely to come. the city of boston declared a public health emergency because the mayor reported some 700 confirmed flu cases in boston alone compared to just 70 during the last flu season. now, the city will offer free flu shots and health officials today urged it is not too late to protect yourself. >> there is is plenty of flu vaccine and people can get it at clinics. local boards of health. pharmacies are well-stocked with vaccine and of course your healthcare provider. >> shepard: eastern pennsylvania, teams have set up temporary flu clinic inside these outdoor tents cut down waiting time in the emergency room. in the chicago area some hospitals went into bypass mode meaning they asked paramedics to other facilities if they could do so safely.

of the morning to you, atlanta. this is hartsfield-jackson atlanta international airport. my goodness, berman, it is 63 degrees there right now later, 72. let's hop on the plane and head over. very nice. good morning to you. welcome back to "early start." it's been a week the people at boeing would rather forget. two more incidents overnight on separate flights of a dreamliner 787 in japan involving a cracked cockpit windshield and an oil leak. it comes on the heels of the dreamliner this week, a fuel spill, an electrical fire and brake problems. now there are reports that the faa will review the dreamliner's power system. cnn's renee marsh is joining us live from washington. this is an alarming pattern of incidents that have occurred overnight and this week. can you walk us through what happened? >> you mentioned it. it is just troubling for boeing there. this is not the day or week you want to have. we're talking about three incidents over a period of three days. you mentioned monday there was a fire that broke out in the belly of one of the 787s on the tarmac there at logan airport in bost

it really should be. >> jonathan mann joins us live from atlanta. jonathan, this is just such a perplexing story. blindness aside, these twins had no other ailment seemingly. their health was fine, and yet legally this was allowed to be carried out? >> reporter: absolutely right. they weren't in pain and had long years ahead of them, but under belgium law, severe psychological suffering is enough to justify a doctor's decision, if they want to make that decision, to help patients commit suicide, and that's, in fact, what happened. and to make a point, they couldn't hear. they were losing their sight. but they used sign language as deaf people, as blind-deaf people and there are terns of thousands of them in the united states. they could have used tactile forms of sign language. it really was a very particular decision and not one that agrees with people's instincts about right and wrong. >> you alluded to it, that the doctors agreed. is that a moral decision the doctors have to make there? or are they required to do as they're asked by the citizenry? >> reporter: there is a law in belgium

children were killed in a fire. it happened in the city of conyers about 25 miles east of atlanta. firefighters say the mother was able to save one child by throwing him from a second- story window. but four other children, the oldest, just 7 years old, could not be saved. the mother is now being treated for serious burns. the cause of the fire is under investigation. >>> time about 7:59. now we're getting new information about monday's near disaster in the san francisco bay. the coast guard says the crew of an oil tanker was warned just before it hit a bay bridge tower. ktvu's brian flores is in our studio with all of the details. >> reporter: good morning. the investigation continues this morning on what led to the tanker, the overseas shankar -- tanker, to sideswipe the bay bridge. we learned that the coast guard did warn the pilot of the hazard ahead. we were told that the tanker warned the bar pilot before the 750-foot oil tanker swayed the bay bridge. a report released states the vessel traffic service center was in constant communication with the pilot. what remains unclear
